Charles Darwin bezeichnete die Galapagos Inseln als “lebendiges Labor der Evolution”. Auf den Inseln sind über 40% der Arten von Flora und Fauna endemisch oder einzigartig. Tauchern sind die Galapagos als Großfisch-Tauchparadies bekannt. Hier wurden bereits über 30 verschiedene Haiarten identifiziert. Die wohl für Galapagos bekanntesten Haiarten sind Hammer-, Galapagos-, Seiden-, Schwarzspitzen- und Weißspitzenhaie.
